Web search and page reading for Claude Desktop

Add Clawifi to Claude Desktop and Claude can search the web, read pages and PDFs, and quote the passages that answer your question, each with its source.

What Clawifi gives Claude Desktop#

In Claude Desktop you research, write and plan. With Clawifi, Claude can read the pages behind an answer, compare what several sources say, and keep the address of each passage it quotes.

  • Search: search_free searches many engines as one and returns ranked results with their sources.
  • Read: fetch_url and scrape_url read pages and PDFs as Markdown; with a query, scrape_url returns only the passages that answer it.
  • Parse and discover: extract_url pulls structured fields from a page; map_site lists a site’s URLs; start_crawl and get_crawl read several pages.
  • Jobs, history and monitors: create_job, get_job, list_history and list_monitors for longer runs and scheduled checks.
  • Cost first: estimate prices a call before it runs, and the account tools show your credits.

Set it up#

  1. 1. Get an API key

    Create an account at clawifi.dev/signup. The Free plan includes 1,000 credits a month. Copy the key the console shows you (it is shown once) and keep it in an environment variable, CLAWIFI_API_KEY.

  2. 2. Install the local server

    The local MCP server (clawifi-mcp) and the CLI come in one package. It needs Python 3.11 or newer.

    Terminal
    pip install clawifi
  3. 3. Paste the config

    Paste into claude_desktop_config.json (Settings, Developer, Edit config), then restart Claude Desktop. Replace your_key with your key.

    claude_desktop_config.json
    {
      "mcpServers": {
        "clawifi": {
          "command": "clawifi-mcp",
          "env": {
            "CLAWIFI_API_KEY": "your_key"
          }
        }
      }
    }
  4. 4. Ask Claude

    After the restart, ask something that needs the web, naming Clawifi if you want Claude to use it.

Questions#

How do I add Clawifi to Claude Desktop?

Install it with pip install clawifi, open Settings, Developer, Edit config, paste the mcpServers block with your key into claude_desktop_config.json, and restart Claude Desktop.

Claude Desktop says the server failed to start. What now?

Check that clawifi-mcp runs in a terminal (it needs Python 3.11 or newer) and that the key in the block is yours. Claude Desktop starts the command from the config, so it has to be on the path it sees.

Do I need a key to try it?

The local server reads your key from the block, so add one: a free API key includes 1,000 credits a month. Without a key, the playground and the free tools work in your browser.

What does it cost?

Most calls cost 1 credit and a browser render 3. Cache hits and failures on Clawifi’s side cost 0; a page whose site answers with an error (such as a 404) is charged as usual. See Pricing.
