# Quickstart

> Get a key, install, add Clawifi to your client and make the first call. Or paste the prompt below into your agent and let it do the steps.

> Set up Clawifi for me. Run `pip install clawifi` (Python 3.11 or newer), add the MCP server to this client with my key (for Claude Code: `claude mcp add clawifi -e CLAWIFI_API_KEY=your_key -- clawifi-mcp`), then check it with `CLAWIFI_API_KEY=my_key clawifi quicktest --url https://example.com`. The steps are at https://clawifi.dev/docs/quickstart.md

## Install in your client

**Claude Code**

```sh
```

**Claude Desktop**

```
**Cursor**
```json

- Install in VS Code: vscode:mcp/install?%7B%22name%22%3A%22clawifi%22%2C%22type%22%3A%22http%22%2C%22url%22%3A%22https%3A%2F%2Fapi.clawifi.dev%2Fmcp%22%7D

No key needed to try: 4 tools, 50 calls a day per address. Add your API key for the full toolset.

## Four steps

### 1. Get a key

Create an account at /signup. The Free plan includes 1,000 credits a month. Verify your email, then copy the API key the console shows you. It is shown once.

**Get a key**

```
https://clawifi.dev/signup
```

### 2. Install

One package installs the MCP server (clawifi-mcp) and the CLI. It needs Python 3.11 or newer.

**Install**

```sh
pip install clawifi
```

### 3. Add to your client

Add Clawifi to your agent with your key. Choose your client below; each line is all it needs.

The lines for every client are in the install card above and on [Clients](https://clawifi.dev/docs/clients).

### 4. First call

Ask your agent to search or read a page (for example "search the web for the Model Context Protocol spec"), or check the key from a terminal first.

**First call**

```sh
CLAWIFI_API_KEY=your_key clawifi quicktest --url https://example.com
```

## A first call

The same search three ways. The response below is a real playground run, recorded on 20 Oct 2026 and trimmed to two results.

**cURL**

```sh
curl https://api.clawifi.dev/search/free \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $CLAWIFI_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"query": "what is the Model Context Protocol"}'
```

**Python**

```python
from clawifi import Clawifi
client = Clawifi()  # reads CLAWIFI_API_KEY
hits = client.search_free("what is the Model Context Protocol")
```

**MCP**

```text
search_free(query="what is the Model Context Protocol")
```

**Response (recorded 20 Oct 2026, trimmed)**

```json
{
  "query": "what is the Model Context Protocol",
  "result_count": 3,
  "results": [
    {
      "title": "What is the Model Context Protocol (MCP)?",
> Add `"dry_run": true` to any paid call to see what it would cost first: its minimum, its maximum where there is one, your balance and whether it would be refused. Nothing runs and nothing is charged.
